Paloma Barhaugh-Bordas and I made these quilts to mark time during the COVID-19 Pandemic. At the beginning of the shutdown, in March 2020, we decided to cohabitate at my home in Amenia, NY, where I had founded the Sappho Room poetry residency two years prior. We made the Sappho Room Quilts over the next year, dreaming up a complicated 3-D delta design and incorporating cotton that we dyed with indigo and cochineal, and cyanotyped using flora and household items from the immediate environment. Subsequent Sappho Room residents have been swaddled in beauty, care and comfort.
